The Item:

Original Southern Syncopated Orchestra in London Program.
Starting in 1919, this African-American group gave Europe its first exposure to such New Orleans jazz greats as Sidney Bechet and led to one of the most famous and early instances of jazz criticism, Ernst-Alexandre Ansermet's "Sur un orchestre negre" in Revue Romande (1919).  According to Ansermet, "the first thing that strikes one about the Southern Syncopated Orchestra is the astonishing perfection, the superb taste, and the fervor of its playing.   . . . There is in the Southern Syncopated Orchestra an extraordinary clarinet virtuoso who is, it seems, the first of his race to have composed perfectly formed blues on the clarinet . . . .   I wish to set down the name of this artist of genius; as for myself, I shall never forget it -- it is Sidney Bechet."  This program is conducted by Egbert Emmanuel Thompson, who became director after the departure of Will Marion Cook in October 1919.  Based on Thompson's presence, I estimate the date as 1919-20.  The band never recorded.
