Baron Elmo Enterprises proudly presents a mindblowing vinyl rarity from the discography of psychedelic warriors SPACEMEN 3: Playing With Fire, an expanded double-lp version of the 1988 original, released in 1999 on the Third Stone label. Utterly ignored by the mainstream press on both sides of the Atlantic (all of whom seemed to prefer the flashier, more sensationalistic Jesus and Mary Chain), it's clear that, two decades after the fact, the importance of Spacemen 3 in the alt-rock lexicon cannot be overstated. While plenty of Brit bands of the day paid lip service to psychedelic pop (usually via the Beatles), these guys were the first to immerse themselves in the full-octane acid groove of Yank bands like Red Krayola, Thirteenth Floor Elevators and Quicksilver, updating that lysergic vibe for the post-punk era. The S3 could grab a single glorious riff and ride it into rapturous infinity, sailing for the heart of the sun on wings of gossamer. Their two-guitar lineup wrapped your head in a warm blanket of six-stringed haze that soothed and rocked simultaneously. At their best, Spacemen 3 were the definitive psych-rock band of the decade… and Playing With Fire captured our guys at their trippy best. Beginning with their previous lp (1987's glorious The Perfect Prescription) the band had been moving into quieter, more contemplative territory, and this classic lp was the result… a wholehearted pursuit of beauty that dazzles and delights. The density of their earlier recordings opens up into a far more spacious sound, and the music assumes a reflective, meditative vibe that guitarist Jason would explore even further in Spiritualized. And this deluxe two-record edition of Playing With Fire more than doubles the amount of music for your dollar, adding thirteen tracks to the original lp's nine. This title is currently available on CD, but we at Baron Elmo Enterprises find that much of the essence of Spacemen 3 is somehow lost in the transition to the digital format. No, this band's groove was meant to be absorbed on a good old-fashioned lp – and we've got a gorgeous, near-mint, and generously expanded copy of one of S3's all-time best (pressed on luscious thick vinyl and packed in a newly designed gatefold jacket) that's just waiting to turn you on, tune you in, and drop you out.
