10" 78 RPM Shellac Record
Graded/Plays V- to V Disc has a daylight crack into the grooves over half the record, but it plays well albeit with clicks, these petering out after awhile.
"Just because I’m from the country, my man treats me like his dog. He want to put me in a stable and keep me like a hog" ......
So runs the lyric of St. Louis Bessie’s 'He Treats Me Like A Dog', illustrating a hard life and a common enough subject amongst the St. Louis women’s blues of the 20’s and 30’s. Accompanied by probably Henry Brown’s doomy piano, she makes her case perfectly.
Chicago was the centre of meat production but, though this was recorded there, Bessie is not singing of that trade on 'Meat Cutter Blues'. She’s begging for it, a butcher that is, to cut her bacon and grind her sausage too and reading between the lines which are set pretty wide, it’s clear as to what she’s referring to! Quite a rare record.
