Description
"Just For The Record" Status Quo 12" red vinyl LP from 1979. Sleeve is hand-signed by all 4 members of the band: Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan.
The record itself has been played only once - just a few weeks ago, to test it does actually play - since being presented to me in 1979.
Between 1977 and 1981, I held various positions within Pye Records, starting as a sales rep before becoming firstly Midlands, London, and then Southern Regional Manager. My roles involved interaction with record shops, wholesalers, reps, merchandisers & pluggers, as well as many of the artists themselves and their management.
This album, as many Quo fans will know, was released by Pye in 1979 as a kind of 'greatest hits from the early years' compilation. The band were on a different label by then and, if my recollection is correct, were involved in (or had just completed) a massive tour. Pye compiled and released this album to capitalise on the attention generated by that tour. However - and this is where my memory gets a bit hazy - we were told that, for some reason that now escapes me, the band were more supportive of this Pye collection of their earlier material, and wanted it to do well - than of their contemporary album at the time.
Anyway, thanks in part to everyone at Pye pulling together, this album - for what was essentially a rehash - did very respectably. So the bigwigs at Pye, including the then Marketing Manager - a lovely South African guy called Matt Hayward - got some albums hand-signed by the band to present to a handful of staff as a 'Thank You' for their efforts. One of which was me.
So that's the background - the 'provenance', if you like. As to the actual item;
I never played the record. Status Quo were a band I liked and admired, but I wasn't fanatical about them. I was proud to own the album but felt no need to play it, as - for my needs - their stuff was on the radio enough. Nor have I kept it in a plastic sleeve or anything, as an artefact. For the best part of 42 years, it's just sat in a cardboard box under the stairs with many of my other vinyls from that time, with the enveloped note still paperclipped to the sleeve. The sleeve is a bit scuffed along the edges, just from storage. The paper inner sleeve is yellowed but totally intact. And the disc itself, in 42 years, had never, ever, been removed from the sleeve till recently.
I'm putting a few records up for sale* - though this one is undoubtedly the flagship. So to check they play OK (not having had a record deck for years) I've bought a little brand-new Bush turntable to test them. So this red vinyl record had its first-ever - and only - clean and play just a few weeks ago. And plays perfectly.

I'll make sure despatch is in a carefully protected manner, with rigid backing, bubblewrap, etc. After surviving this long, I don't want a courier bending it in half to force through someone's letterbox! Though most couriers, it must be said, are pretty well-intentioned.
*If you're interested in other vinyls, do see my Other Listings. Most of the ones from the Pye days - though they're nothing like the value of this one - will have been played either just once, a couple of times or never. As most of them, like this one, have sat untouched for 42 years!
