Description

redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful LP from Capitol (SP 8364, UK EMI pressing, rainbow label / Capitol FDS logo at 9 o’clock, stereo, laminated heavy flipback jacket) features conductor William Steinberg and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s magnificent accounts of Paul Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler and Ernst Toch’s Symphony No. 3, a work commissioned and premiered by Steinberg and the PSO. This is masterful conducting – and playing – by any measure. Both recordings are landmarks in the discographies of their respective composers – wonderful!

Both works were richly recorded in the fine acoustics of Syria Mosque, Pittsburgh, in October 1956.

There are informative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The notes include an essay by composer Ernst Toch on his Third Symphony. The striking cover art was executed by Kelly-Seltzer.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is mild shelfwear and corner wear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a truly fine collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
