Eminently rare boxed single LP of the Rachmaninoff Cello Sonata, Op. 19 (1901). Cellist Stephen Kates died at age 59 in 2003. (The 1739 Montagnana cello that is used on this recording was sold for $6 million by his widow in 2011!) This sealed Sonic Arts Laboratory Series 26 digital, direct-to-disc LP was pressed by Teldec in Germany in 1981. The LP has appeared only once in current Popsike listings, in 2012, where a copy sold for $65, and appears not at all on Ebay. Interestingly, the photo of the album box on Popsike shows a different cover art: a photo of Kates sitting and playing the cello. My copy, as you can see, has a weird abstract purple/red abstract photo of something or other. (I have no idea if that makes my copy rarer than the edition [second edition?] with Kates’ photo or not.) Anyway, you’re not likely to see this again, especially sealed, and with this off-beat cover. Carolyn Pope Kobler is the piano accompanist. As expected, LP and box are in prime, mint condition.
