Ultra rare Japan-only audiophile lp with experimental percussion duets, including the sidelong classic minimalist work Piano Phase performed in the rarely-heard alternate orchestration for 2 marimbas originally proposed in Reich's score (I believe this is the only existing recording of this version). This was Reich's first non-electronic study in phase shifting, using subtle variations in repeated patterns to create complex polyrhythms and interrelationships. Sumire Yoshihara is the main performer on various percussions; she is accompanied by Masami Nakagawa, flute, Kazue Sawai, 17-string koto, and Yasunari Yamaguchi, marimba. Includes Japanese OBI strip and english notes insert.

Steve Reich studied with William Bergsma, Vincent Persichetti, Luciano Berio, and Darius Milhaud, and is associated with the late 20th century 'minimalism' movement along with Philip Glass, La Monte Young, John Adams, Terry Riley, Charlemagne Palestine, Phill Niblock, and Tony Conrad. • Noda is a Japanese composer associated with Stockhausen and influenced by Edgard Varese. • Ishii studied under Akira Ifukube, Tomojiro Ikenouchi, Akeo Watanabe, Boris Blacher, and Josef Rufer and was influenced by the serialism of Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, Anton Webern, and Pierre Boulez; his work is associated with that of Toru Takemitsu and Toshiro Mayuzumi. • Yoshihara is known for her work with Maki Ishii, Steve Reich, Toru Takemitsu, and Toshi Ichiyanagi.
