 In 1981 I saw Steve Vai perform in Frank Zappa's band and was blown away. This was his first pro gig and I somehow got signed up on his mailing list. I received newsletter #1 which had some merchandise for sale, including the first pressing of his first solo album Flex-Able, the Flexable Leftovers EP, and some written material: Mini Guitar Lessons and Tempo-Mental, an article he wrote on rhythmic subdivision. This auction is for ALL THE ABOVE, both original albums, the original written materials, the newsletter, and also copies of a few magazine articles from the 1980's.
 Before working in Zappa's band he worked for him as a transcriber listening to numerous Zappa guitar solo recordings and transcribing them for what became The Frank Zappa Guitar Book. The Tempo-Mental article included with this auction explains various concepts of subdividing a beat and/or stretching phrases across more than one beat. This knowledge was put to use to achieve this incredible transcription task and has also been utilized throughout Steve's career in his own music.
 A breakdown of the Mini Guitar Lessons can be seen in the photo of the newsletter and this is the complete set of 11 lessons; 300 to 500 words on each topic such as right hand hammering, whammy bar technique, vibrato, two-handed chords, etc. Both Tempo-Mental and the Mini Guitar lessons are the originals, bound just as I received them. One has some red dye on the edges but not too much on the face of the pages, otherwise they are undamaged and ready to be devoured by the lucky recipient.
 The records are the earliest pressings of Steve Vai's first releases. They are both still in shrink wrap and both record sleeves are in excellent to near mint condition. The Flex-Able album has some scuffs and scratches but is still in decent shape. The Leftovers album however is not in very good shape. It looks like there are some cracks in the vinyl that can be seen on both sides of the record. The record hasn't broken (yet) but looks like it might at any time. I don't have a working turntable so I haven't been able to try to play it. I am sure these pressings were done on the cheap and the quality just wasn't there. The Leftovers record fits very tightly in the carboard sleeve and I think there was too much stress on the record during storage. My pricing takes this into account. Both records include the lyric sheet insert and Flexable also has an order form for Flexable Leftovers.

Many browsers will automatically size the picture to fit on the screen but if you zoom in you will find that most pictures are MANY TIMES BIGGER than the ones in the ebay listing.
