This box sets is one of the holy grials on the Munster Records catalogue, issued in 1992 as an homage to the late Stiv Bators, died on 1990.
It was a very special and limited edition in cooperation with Bomp! Records (Bomp! put the records and Munster put the printing stuff). 4 singles comes with picture sleeve, and one in a paper white sleeve (see details below). Also comes with a 4 page booklet with rare photos and the story of these recordings by Greg Shaw. Let's see the records:
The music contained in this 7"s are the first Stiv Bators recordings as a solo artist after the break up of The Dead Boys plus a bonus double 7"ep recorded live from a Dead Boys one-off comeback tour of 1980. Let's see them one by one:
First one is a reissue of Stiv's solo debut of 1979, It's Cold Outside / The Last Year but as the labels read the songs are alternate versions. It's cold outside is a cover of Ohio legends The Choir, and the flip is a Stiv and Steve/Jeff Jones song. By the way, as Greg Shaw writes on the liner notes, Steve/Jeff Jones is the alter ego of Franc Secich, Stiv's friend and Ohio guitarist on the band Blue Ash. He had to use this name due to contractual issues and it fact, it was the real name of Blue Ash roadie.
The second single is a reissue of Stiv's second solo single and as before, the recordings included here are alternate versions.
The third record is exclusive for this box set and it contains two outtakes from the recording sessions of Stiv's debut album Disconnected.
The fourth and last record, a double 7" EP set (it was first planned to be a single 7" MLP), gathers a comeback concert of the Dead Boys from the live 1980 tour. As Greg Shaw recalls "Stiv was never able to resist an offer to reform The Dead Boys for some quick, easy money. During the BOMP years he was not speaking terms with the original Dead Boys, but he had no qualms about accepting gigs and tours as The Dead Boys with whatever band he could throw together. To the end of his live, this temptation proved irresistible. The charade reached ludicrous proportions, such as the 1980 Dead Boys Tour he did with the band who'd played on Disconnected, all of them wearing skinny ties, mod shirts, bowl haircuts... this was the last thing diehard Dead Boys fans wanted to see, but he was willing to take their money and endure their jeers. Besides, the music was always great; ironically the merseybeat Dead Boys were far better musicians than the real thing, although it had to be admitted that Cheetah Chrome's kamikaze guitar could never be replaced..."
