One of the harder to find Stockhausen lps, Ensemble was a collaborative experiment between Stockhausen and 12 student composers which arose out of a class ("Kompositionsstudio") he taught at Darmstadt. Each composer contributed their own tape of electronic sounds and composition for solo instrument, which were then combined under Stockhausen's direction into a single live electronic composition for amplified & filtered instruments, shortwave radios, and tape. The students were Rolf Gehlhaar, Johannes G. Fritsch, Tomas Marco, Avo Somer, Nicolaus A. Huber, Robert Wittinger, John McGuire, Peter R. Farmer, Gregory Biss, Jurgen Beurle, Mesias Maiguashca, and Jorge Peixinho. Performing the piece are Aloys Kontarsky on Hammond organ, electronics operators/"sound controllers" Petr Kotik, Harald Boje, Alden Jenks, and David Johnson, and Ensemble Hudba Dneska (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, violin, cello, contrabass, percussion). Stockhausen was a German experimental composer who was a student of Olivier Messiaen and Werner Meyer-Eppler, a contemporary of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis, and worked with Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karel Goeyvaerts, Cornelius Cardew, Hugh Davies, Bruno Maderna, and Mauricio Kagel; he pioneered electronic music at the INA-GRM musique concrete studios of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bayle, and Bernard Parmegiani, at NHK Tokyo where Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Jon Appleton also composed, and at WDR Koln along with Herbert Eimert, Robert Beyer, Henri Pousseur, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Gyorgi Ligeti, Franco Evangelisti, Konrad Boehmer, Anestis Logothetis, and Herbert Brun, and he explored improvisation and live electronics with David Tudor, Vinko Globokar, Michel Portal, and New Phonic Art. • Kotik is a composer, conductor, and flutist who founded the SEM Ensemble, worked with David Tudor, Lejaren Hiller, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Lucas Foss, adapted the words of R. Buckminster Fuller and Gertrude Stein into experimental compositions, and is known for his pioneering realization of the complete musical work of Marcel Duchamp. • Hungarian-Austrian composer Wittinger studied under Zsolt Durko and cites Gyorgy Kurtag, Witold Lutoslawski, and Rudolf Maros as influences. • This lp will be of interest to listeners of live electronic artists like Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV), AMM, Il Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuovo Consonanza, Alvin Lucier, David Behrman, Sonic Arts Union, Frederic Rzewski, Cornelius Cardew, and Derek Bailey's Company.

Packing I pack professionally and with the utmost care drawn from years of experience trading vinyl internationally. I use new record mailers from Cameron Packaging (which I have determined are the best and most protective) reinforced with cardboard inserts and bubble wrap padding. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves and with the vinyl outside of the cover to prevent damage. All packages are completely sealed with strong packing tape covering all openings. Unless requested, no paper invoice is included in the package, both to save trees and to avoid customs difficulties. If you'd like your package done any differently, just let me know.
