Scarce 1957 live recording from the early postwar european avant garde, documenting a concert of Boulez' Domaine Musical society at a time when these young composers were exploding the ideas of serialism and atonality into a newer and more radically experimental music. This album contains one of David Tudor's earliest recordings, performing the Boulez piece alongside flutist Severino Gazzelloni. Stockhausen's Zeitmasze is based on his concept of "relative rhythm" (that is, tempo relative to the lung capacity and playing ability of each musician). Boulez conducts the Berio and Stockhausen works. Gazzelloni is also the main soloist in the Berio work. The Messiaen piece is played by Yvonne Loriod.

Stockhausen was a German experimental composer who was a student of Olivier Messiaen and Werner Meyer-Eppler, a contemporary of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis, and worked with Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karel Goeyvaerts, Cornelius Cardew, Bruno Maderna, and Mauricio Kagel; he pioneered electronic music at the INA-GRM musique concrete studios of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bayle, and Bernard Parmegiani, at NHK Tokyo where Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Jon Appleton also composed, and at WDR Koln along with Herbert Eimert, Robert Beyer, Henri Pousseur, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Gyorgi Ligeti, Franco Evangelisti, Konrad Boehmer, Anestis Logothetis, and Herbert Brun, and he explored improvisation and live electronics with David Tudor, Hugh Davies, Vinko Globokar, Michel Portal, and New Phonic Art. • Berio was a pupil of Luigi Dallapiccola and Olivier Messiaen, collaborated with Italo Calvino, was married to Cathy Berberian, associated with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, and Luigi Dallapiccola, taught Steve Reich, founded the Milan Studio di Fonologia, and directed the electroacoustic department of ICRAM in Paris. • Boulez is an influential French postwar composer, conductor, writer, and lecturer who worked with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Pierre Schaeffer, Iannis Xenakis, and Gyorgi Ligeti, and was a student of Arnold Schoenberg and Olivier Messiaen. • Known as the father of the French avant garde, Messiaen worked with Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry, and was an essential teacher of Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Francois Bayle, and Francois Bernard Mache (among many other 20th century luminaries); he was influenced by Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, Hindu music, Gamelan, and nature (birdsong), and his composing style was driven in part by his synesthesia (a brain condition that caused him to visually perceive sounds). • Tudor studied under Stefan Wolpe, Irma Wolpe, and William Hawke, collaborated with artists Robert Rauschenberg, Lowell Cross, Carson Jeffries, Bill Viola, and Viola Farber, and as the foremost American experimental keyboard interpreter worked with John Cage, Earle Brown, Morton Feldman, Christian Wolff, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Kagel, Sylvano Bussotti, and Pierre Boulez.

Packing I pack professionally and with the utmost care drawn from years of experience trading vinyl internationally. I use new record mailers from Cameron Packaging (which I have determined are the best and most protective) reinforced with cardboard inserts and bubble wrap padding. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves and with the vinyl outside of the cover to prevent damage. All packages are completely sealed with strong packing tape covering all openings. Unless requested, no paper invoice is included in the package, both to save trees and to avoid customs difficulties. If you'd like your package done any differently, just let me know.
