Mixtur is one of the earliest live electronic works; Stockhausen directs, mixes, amplifies, filters and modulates the playing of the Ensemble Hudba Dneska under Ladislav Kupkovic and sine-wave generator operators Johannes G. Frith, Harald Boje, Rolf Gehlhaar, and David Johnson. Telemusik is a musique concrete piece that dates from Stockhausen's Hymnen period and similarly attempts to be "a music of the whole world, of all countries and races" by deriving sounds from field recordings made by the composer on location in Japan, Sahara, Bali, Vietnam, China, the Amazons, Spain, and Hungary; using intermodulation, these "old found objects" are paired with electronic studio-produced "new sound events... combined into a higher unity." It was created on a special Japanese 6-track tape-recorder using sine-wave, delta, function, and pilot frequency generators, beat frequency oscillators, transposing tape recorders, amplitude and ring modulators, and high- and low-pass filters; the piece was realized at the NHK Tokyo Studio For Electronic Music (where Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Jon Appleton were also pioneers). Highly recommended.

Stockhausen was a student of Olivier Messiaen, a contemporary of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis, and peers with Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karel Goeyvaerts, Mauricio Kagel, Franco Evangelisti, Herbert Eimert, and Henri Pousseur; he pioneered electronic music at the INA-GRM musique concrete studios of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bayle, and Bernard Parmegiani, at NHK Tokyo, and at WDR Koln. Stockhausen's pioneering work from this period would lay the foundation for live electronic and improv artists like John Zorn, Derek Bailey, Borbetomagus, Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV), AMM, Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuovo Consonanza, Otomo Yoshihide, Gordon Mumma, Alvin Lucier, Robert Ashley, David Behrman, Sonic Arts Union, etc. Other references: Tod Dockstader, Rune Lindblad, Dick Raaijmakers, Henk Badings, Pauline Oliveros...
