Now come on lads, you were never really punks at all were you? You sounded more like the Doors and used a keyboard and rickenbacker bass guitar. However needs must and in the summer of 1977 stuff wasn't going to get released if it wasn't punk related so they invented a term New Wave to cover all the rock bands like the Jam, Police, Blondie, Boomtown Rats and indeed our friends here the Stranglers that had been caught out of step by the punk movement. The Stranglers as I mentioned had keyboards and were basically punk for Genesis fans. I am making this sound not a good thing aren't i? Well they produced one of the greatest albums ever made for their debut album in my opinion. 9 tracks all brilliant covering a range of styles but all driven by that Rickenbacker bass of Jean Jacques Burnell. The follow up album little more than 6 months later, No More Heroes was not quite as consistent but it's highs were stellar with the singles No More Heroes and Something better change and Dagenham Dave amongst the prime cuts. Finally a year later in the summer of 1978 came Black and White with it's classics Sweden All quiet on the Western Front, Nice and Sleazy, Threatened and Enough Time. Tokyo also gave a hit of future directions sounding like a forerunner to Golden Brown. However I did see them in 1977 at the Roundhouse and they were dreadful - Hugh was furious about the crowd gobbing at him and they played a very short gig and were very abusive.
