Recorded live at New York's Knitting Factory Jan. 29 + 30, 1988, the Hidden Fire LPs (this one and Vol. 2) are the final two Saturn-issued albums of his career (though other albums were to come out on other labels). They are also the most puzzling to many Sun Ra loyalists, as there is little documentation on these releases. Some say that they were released in a batch of under 100 (though I've seen no actual proof to that number), but it can't be argued that this was part of a very small run. To compound things even more, my album is labeled "Volume 1" on one side and "Volume 2" on the other. Hmmm...
How did I score a copy? I was in the right place at the right time. Papa Jazz (Columbia, SC) had a pipeline to some of the late El Saturn releases from a contact in NYC. They managed to get 5 copies of each LP and I was there when they opened the package. I scored one, while the others were snapped up by other store workers. None made it to the record bins.
In any case, this is as much a rarity as it is a part of history- and you have a chance to own it.
