Description
2 acetates (masters) of Memphis Recording and Sound Service which is the name of Sun Studios before it opened as Sun Records. Sam used to record everything from weddings to musicians. He'd driver down the countryside and find things to document with his portable recorder. That means the man himself who made ELVIS created these personally!
They are 78's. They have a box on the label checked as "Outside." They say Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4.
It is a recording of a wedding. I can not make out the names but it sounds like the bride might be "Peggy Atwater." No confirmation on that though. I don't know what year it was recorded but have been told these red labels were used primarily 1950-1952.
I found these acetates in Clarksdale, MS. They had been owned by a man that passed away along with crates of records that they had in a closet and sold me.It is my guess that the acetates literally sat for years as the grooves look so clean. The labels are old and you can see the glue stains. The discs look new with the exception of a tiny chip on the edge of one where you can see the metal plate inside. One label is half torn off. I took it to a professional in Nashville and had it recorded. I will add the cd in with it.
I urge you not to play this on a low grade record player. You will destroy the integrity of the grooves. What you are about to bid on is a piece of history.
This is great for a Sun Records enthusiast. I love old rockabilly but we are raising money for our own documentary Hard Soil - The Muddy Roots of American Music. The proceeds will go to the filming costs. www.hardsoilfilm.com www.muddyrootsmusic.com
History on the brand:
Samuel Cornelius Phillips (January 5, 1923 – July 30, 2003), better known as Sam Phillips, was an American businessman, record executive, record producer and DJ who played an important role in the emergence of rock and roll as the major form of popular music in the 1950s. He was a producer, label owner, and talent scout throughout the 1940s and 1950s. He most notably founded Sun Studios and Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee. Through Sun, Phillips discovered such recording talent as Howlin' Wolf, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash. The height of his success culminated in his launching of Elvis Presley's career in 1954. He is also associated with several other noteworthy rhythm and blues and rock and roll stars of the period. Phillips sold Sun in 1969. He was an early investor in the Holiday Inn chain of hotels. He also advocated racial equality and helped break down racial music industry barriers.
Sun Studio is a recording studio opened by rock pioneer Sam Phillips at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, on January 3, 1950. It was originally called Memphis Recording Service, sharing the same building with the Sun Records label business. Reputedly the first rock-and-roll single, Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats' "Rocket 88" was recorded there in 1951 with song composer Ike Turner on keyboards, leading the studio to claim status as the birthplace of rock & roll. Blues and R&B artists like Howlin' Wolf, Junior Parker, Little Milton, B.B. King, James Cotton, Rufus Thomas, and Rosco Gordon recorded there in the early 1950s.
Rock-and-roll, country music, and rockabilly artists, including Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Charlie Feathers, Ray Harris, Warren Smith, Charlie Rich, and Jerry Lee Lewis, recorded there throughout the mid to late 1950s until the studio outgrew its Union Avenue location. Sam Phillips opened the larger Sam C. Phillips Recording Studio, better known as Phillips Recording, in 1959 to take the place of the older facility. Since Sam had invested in the Holiday Inn Hotel chain earlier, he also recorded artists starting in 1963 on the label Holiday Inn Records for Kemmons Wilson. In 1957, Bill Justis recorded his Grammy Hall of Fame song "Raunchy" for Sam Phillips and worked as a musical director at Sun Records.
