Without necessarily intending it, Greg Anderson and Steven O'Malley made a grand and assured statement with 'White 1' and its partner 'White 2', re-aligning the metal genre and placing 'doom' on the lips of music journalists and hipsters worldwide. Suddenly mainstream magazines were falling over themselves to get a piece of this new fragment of the metal genre and the kids were somehow able to refine their attention spans and listen to hours of gluey droning music. In fact the acceptance of slower music may be the band's greatest triumph, for all the reviews and interviews, what we have really been left with is a new approval for subtle and slow moving music - people are now happy to go to a gig and listen to the same chord for an hour. Now that's what I call development - not so long ago I'm sure people were all about the quick fix, the MTV Generation wasn't it? And now we've got Sunn O))), Boris and their droney friends dominating tours and festivals worldwide. Enough about the band's importance anyway, if you haven't heard them there could be no better place to start, 'White 1' was where the duo really got their act together and produced something coherent, deep and also varied. Yes varied, you heard correctly, there is all sorts thrown into the mix here - Julian Cope's vocals, some tight clipped percussion and of course that gloomy pagan ambience. As it notes on the back cover, maximum volume yields maximum results, so turn this up loud and feel the glory of Sunn O))). A Huge recommendation.
