Sunshine 3003 - Kid Ory's Sunshine Orchestra
"Ory's Creole Trombone" & "Society Blues"
This record will get both the jazz and the label collectors excited. The jazz collector will recognize this as the first recording of Kid Ory, made in Los Angeles in June, 1922 on the elusive Nordskog label. The label collector will recognize it as a rare paste over label of the Nordskog issue, distributed by the Spikes Brothers Phonograph Company of Los Angeles. Either way, it is sure to get the heart going a little faster.
It would be wonderful if we could say this copy is in excellent condition, but sadly, it is not. There is the usual amount of rubs, surface marks, scratches and groove wear that would quailty it as only an average copy. There is also a 1 inch crack that has tape reinforcement at the rim, but will sound when played. It may cause one repeating groove on side 1, depending on your particular tone arm and cartridge. The edges of the paste on label are somewhat flaked, and there is a dealer sticker on side 1 from the Pankey Music Shop in Oakland CA. But in spite of these defects, it is still an impressive record to show to your collector friends. After you win this one, you can set your sights on a Black Patti.
