Description
This is one of the hardest to find of all the early Victor red seal recordings, a VICTOR PATTI RECORD. In the very early days of Victor, the company produced a special label for only three artists, Adelina Patti, Francesco Tamagno, and one other. Adelina Patti was one of the legendary singers of the 19th C, and was over 60 when Victor arranged to set up their recording equipment in her home, to make a series of recordings around 1905. Hardly any of these original Patti records survive, and they are very hard to find. This is the song Batti Batti, from the Mozart opera Don Giovanni, and Patti's voice comes through clearly in this old recording. Not much surface noise, a lot better than most of the very early recordings. Has a couple of very minor surface blemishes, not needle drops, which do not sound. On request I can send photos of the little blemishes, which will show that they really are tiny. On the back is a pricing statement, that this retailed for $5.00, at a time when the nightly rate at the Plaza Hotel in New York was less than $4. There is also an impression of a recording angel pressed into the back. It looks like Patti signed the front of the disc in the center wax, but the label covers up most of the signature, showing just the edges. This ultra rare disc will be securely packed in an oversize box for protection. Ships at $7.00
