Description
These are the original metal master discs ('mothers') used to make Supergrasses second single released on green vinyl by Backbeat records in September 1994 just before the band were signed to EMI. The discs are negatives of the vinyl itself made by electroplating the acetate master which is then ruined and discarded. (The original acetate was cut by Porky's on Shaftesbury Avenue, London. He is responsible for cutting many many legendary British records. Check for any record with 'A Porky Prime Cut' inscribed around the centre...) But I digress... These 'mother' discs are then kept safe as the masters from which new stampers are made each time a pressing is ordered. They actually do play on a turntable, only backwards!
Included in the auction is a one of the first copies of the single itself (the original run was of just 500 records) in lurid green with a 'best sound on record' sleeve. The original run of records was infact mostly bought up by EMI themselves in an attempt to stop the single reaching the shops and taking the wind out of their own release. Later pressings did reach the shops but they were all in different shades of green (a light toothpastey green and a darker mint green) and none had the card sleeve.
Also included in the auction is a white label test pressing of the record (one of only 5 made). These are made and sent out before the record is actually put into production, in order to check there are no faults in the pressing.
