I Supertramp sono un gruppo rock britannico nato nel 1970. Il gruppo viene fondato nel 1970 da Rick Davies e Roger Hodgson. Il primo album del nuovo corso è probabilmente il più completo. "Crime of the Century" (1974), realizzato in pochissimo tempo e prodotto da Ken Scott, li porterà al successo immediato. In questo periodo anche la critica riconosce le qualità dei Supertramp. Del disco fanno parte pezzi storici della band come School, Bloody Well Right e Dreamer, nonché la stessa Crime of the Century. Di ottima fattura anche "Crisis? What Crisis?", del 1975, primo registrato (parzialmente) negli Stati Uniti, e che porta la band in tour per tutto il mondo. Sul palco, le due personalità opposte e congruenti di Davies e Hodgson si occupano di diffondere semplicemente la musica del gruppo, mentre all'estro e alla simpatia di Helliwell sono demandati tutti i compiti di intrattenimento e di presentazione dei pezzi. Le personalità meno appariscenti di Thomson e Siebenberg fanno da colonna vertebrale del sound della band. Nel 1977 il gruppo si sposta definitivamente negli Stati Uniti per la registrazione di "Even in the Quietest Moments...", e da lì i Supertramp non si sposteranno mai più. L'album continua nell'opera di consolidamento delle fortune del quintetto britannico, grazie soprattutto al singolo Give a Little Bit. L'apice del successo arriva nel 1979, con "Breakfast in America", caratterizzato da una gustosa copertina raffigurante la "skyline" di Manhattan composta da stoviglie varie, ed un retro-copertina dove i cinque Supertramp appaiono in un bar statunitense di fronte alla propria colazione, ognuno di loro col giornale della propria città natale in mano...un vero e proprio best-seller della storia del rock. L'album coniuga ottima fattura e orecchiabilità dei pezzi, con testi tutt'altro che banali, oscillanti come negli altri album di quel periodo fra una pensosa malinconia e una costante ironia. Dal fortunato album saranno sfornati ben quattro singoli di grande successo: The Logical Song, Breakfast in America, Goodbye Stranger e Take the Long Way Home. Il responso popolare è incredibile, l'album resiste in classifica per quasi un anno intero, i Supertramp entrano di diritto nella storia della musica popolare. Segue un lungo tour mondiale che viene testimoniato dal suggestivo doppio live "Paris" del 1980. Ma il feeling tra Rick e Roger non è più quello di qualche anno prima. Il successivo lavoro in studio, "...Famous Last Words...", esce sul finire del 1982 e sarà l'ultimo prima dell'abbandono di Roger, nonostante l'ottimo successo dei singoli It's Raining Again e My Kind of Lady. Al termine della lunga tournée che segue la realizzazione dell'album, i Supertramp e Roger Hodgson torneranno in studio separati. Causa della divisione, si saprà successivamente, le divergenze, anche termini di management, tra Davis e Hogdson che non accetta la moglie di Rick come manager.

Breakfast In America è il loro sesto album in studio, pubblicato nel 1979, registrato l'anno precedente al Village Recorder a Los Angeles (California). L'album, prodotto da Peter Henderson e dagli stessi Supertramp, è stato quello di maggior successo nella carriera dei Supertramp, con oltre 4 milioni di copie vendute nei soli Stati Uniti d'America (18 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo). The Supertramp is a British rock group born in 1970. The group was founded in 1970 by Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson. The first album of new course is probably the most comprehensive.
