"Sylvia Plath taped this recording on October 30, 1962, three days after her thirtieth birthday. That October was probably the most important month in her life: newly separated from her husband - the poet Ted Hughes - she experienced a rush of creative energy that must have been nearly overwhelming; it produced at least 26 poems in October, the core of the manuscript for ARIEL. She rose to her work at four each morning, before her two babies were up - it was, she wrote to another poet, "like writing inside God's intestine." She was also perfectly aware of the extraordinary achievement these poems represent. In a letter to her mother in the middle of the month she said, "I am a genius of a writer: I have it in me. I am writing the best poems of my life; they will make my name ..." With her usual intuition, she correctly predicted that they should win a Pulitzer Prize but wouldn't - in fact, her work never won a major literary award, even after her death (February 11, 1963). These bits of circumstance are just that, however - beyond all these facts there is the voice that speaks these poems, and that voice is of such an astonishing nature that it must simply be experienced on its own terms. There is nothing, so far as I know, in the history of recorded literature to equal it." - Frances McCullough
