This excellent LP from Fontana · Philips (SCFL 107 / 876 009 CY, UK pressing, red/silver Full Stereo label, stereo) features two legendary conductors in two amazing performances:

George Szell conducting the Andante and Purgatorio (Ed. Otto Jokl) from Mahler’s uncompleted Symphony No. 10 – recorded on 1 November 1958 at Severance Hall with The Cleveland Orchestra

Leopold Stokowski conducting his own ‘synthesis’ of the “Love Music from Acts II and III” (Liebesnacht and Liebstod) from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde – recorded at the Academy of Music on 25 February 1960 with The Philadelphia Orchestra

(One wonders how Szell felt about sharing a disc with Stokowski.) He should have been pleased as Stokwoski and The Philadelphia Orchestra turn in a masterly performance. Both recordings burn with conviction and are imbued with a tremendous sense of occasion.

On the reverse side of the jacket are printed superb liner notes by Klaus George Roy (Mahler) and David Johnson (Wagner) – all texts in English only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is GOOD. There is considerable edgewear, discoloration, and a small bit of writing to the rear panel, but that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, or owners’ markings and the jacket remains solid, bright, and glossy – still a decent copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is enjoyable. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
