This handsome 3-LP box set from Mercury (SR3-9017, US pressings, plum/silver label, grooved, SR stampers, stereo, booklet included) entitled “Henryk Szeryng · 4 Great Violin Concertos” features the legendary virtuoso at the absolute height of his considerable powers. Moreover, in 4 remarkable recordings from the “golden age of stereo”.

This handsome set offers outstanding pressings of these remarkable recordings, all of them of a quality that silences criticism, reaffirming Szeryng's statures as one of the great violinists of the last Century – a dazzling, questing virtuoso with a beautifully golden tone and faultless musicianship.

Included in this remarkable set are the following works:

Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 61 – rec. 8-10 July 1965 with Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. In the first movement, Szeryng plays Joachim's cadenza, while in the third he plays that of Carl Flesch.

Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 35 – rec. in July 1962 with Antal Dorati conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.

Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor Op. 63 – rec. in July 1965 with Gennady Rohzdestvensky conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.

Sibelius' Violin Concerto in D minor Op. 47 – rec. 22-24 July 1965 with Gennady Rozhdestvensky conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.

Included is a full-size 2-page booklet with extensive liner notes by Bernard Jacobson and James Lyons – printed in English only. The striking cover photos of Szeryng are uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the box is EXCELLENT. There is some minor cracking (not a split) to the upper edge and to the side of the lower box, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, corner breaks, owners’ markings, bends, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector’s copy.

The condition of the 3 LPs is near-MINT. Although the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) these are fine copies and playback is superb. If you must have flawless surfaces, then please do not buy this set – these rate as NM collector's copies.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
