This handsome 4 LP box set from French Philips (6707 011, French pressing, red/white “Tresors Classiques” labels, cloth box, booklet included) features Henryk Szeryng's wonderfully refined and aristocratic survey of Mozart’s complete works for violin and orchestra, recorded during 1966-1970, and still a landmark in the Mozart discography.

In reviewing the entire cycle that Szeryng recorded with Gibson, The Gramophone wrote:

“With an unfailingly beautiful tone, Henryk Szeryng has a relaxed way with the Mozart concertos, and the New Philharmonia under Sir Alexander Gibson is alert yet sensitive.

“...Henryk Szeryng has a relaxed way with the solo concertos, and the orchestral contribution from the New Philharmonia under Sir Alexander Gibson is alert yet sensitive. The soloist's tone is unfailingly beautiful, too, with an essential sweetness that Menuhin and Accardo in their different way both eschew.

“Arguably the result is a fraction over-suave, but I find its evident affection makes for pleasing listening, as do the well-chosen tempos; and the rumbustious 'Turkish' episode in the finale of No. 5 has spirit without harshness. The 1966-70 recordings are satisfying, as we so often find with this company. Of the versions of the solo concertos considered here, these are the ones that I would choose...”

Included is a full-size, 12-page booklet with extensive notes on the music (by Henry-Jacques) – printed in English, German, and French – as well as numerous illustrations and prints. The striking cover photo of Szeryng is simlarly uncredited.

PLEASE NOTE:

Even with minimal packaging this set will weigh over 1 kg. This means that outside of Europe the cost for shipping is about $40 USD, and that is just for standard airmail. Certified airmail (with a tracking number) costs $43 USD.

Those in doubt can visit the Spanish postal website (Correos.com), which is available in English. Although this listing states “free” shipping, it is not really free, of course. I have to pay for shipping like everyone else.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the cloth box is EXCELLENT. There is minor wear to the top and bottom of the spine, but really that is all. There are no bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector’s copy.

The condition of the full-size, 12-page booklet is NM – a superb copy in every way.

The condition of the 4 LPs is near-MINT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) these are fine copies and playback is superb. If you must have flawless surfaces, then please do not buy this set – these rate as NM collector's copies.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
