This handsome LP from Philips (802 709 LY, Dutch pressing, red/silver label, stereo, heavy gatefold jacket) features Henryk Szeryng's wonderfully refined and aristocratic accounts of Mozart's Violin Concertos No. 5 in A Major K. 219 “Turkish” and No. 6 in D Major K. 271, landmark performances, and captured in truly beautiful sound.

In reviewing the entire cycle that Szeryng recorded with Gibson, The Gramophone wrote:

“With an unfailingly beautiful tone, Henryk Szeryng has a relaxed way with the Mozart concertos, and the New Philharmonia under Sir Alexander Gibson is alert yet sensitive.

“...Henryk Szeryng has a relaxed way with the solo concertos, and the orchestral contribution from the New Philharmonia under Sir Alexander Gibson is alert yet sensitive. The soloist's tone is unfailingly beautiful, too, with an essential sweetness that Menuhin and Accardo in their different way both eschew.

“Arguably the result is a fraction over-suave, but I find its evident affection makes for pleasing listening, as do the well-chosen tempos; and the rumbustious 'Turkish' episode in the finale of No. 5 has spirit without harshness. The 1966-70 recordings are satisfying, as we so often find with this company. Of the versions of the solo concertos considered here, these are the ones that I would choose...”

Incidentally, there are excellent liner notes (on the reverse side of the jacket by Jennifer Standage, printed in German only. The striking cover photo of Szeryng is uncredited.

PLEASE NOTE:

These Philips “Lux” pressings are quite heavy – even with minimal packaging, prepared for shipping they weigh over 600 kg. This means that outside of Europe the cost for shipping is about $30 USD, and that is just for standard airmail. Certified airmail (with a tracking number) costs $33 USD. Those in doubt can visit the Spanish postal website (Correos.com), which is available in English.

Although this listing states “free” shipping, it is not really free, of course. I have to pay for shipping like everyone else. CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is very minor creasing and shelfwear, but that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, owners' markings or other defects and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
