This handsome LP from Fontana (6531 001, Dutch pressing, blue/silver label, stereo) features Henryk Szeryng's Olympian account of Brahms's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 77, recorded in the spacious acoustics of London's Watford Town Hall on 18 and 22 July 1962 with conductor Antal Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra. Produced by Harold Lawrence and engineered by C. Robert Fine, the sound – even in mono – is so expertly managed that one hardly registers the absence of stereo – truly superb.
Wrote the outstanding critic Victor Carr Jr. for ClassicsToday.com:
"Henryk Szeryng's robust and resonant violin tone at times takes on a dark quality more like a viola--quite different from the bright sound of Heifetz. The result is a certain weighty seriousness to Szeryng's playing, even in the dancing finale.... Though Szeryng adopts an aristocratic stance in the Brahms, he sacrifices none of his flair, masterfully negotiating Brahms' challenging double-stops while rendering the composer's lovely melodies with great feeling. Szeryng's fashioning of the standard Joachim cadenza is so artful that it sounds pleasingly fresh, not at all the staid warhorse it has become today. Antal Doráti skillfully conducts…while the London Symphony offers its usual first-rate playing."
There are brief liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in German only. The striking cover photo of Szeryng is similarly uncredited.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD-. There is a visible scuff (a line) across the top front of the jacket. There is also bumping/wear at corners. However, there are no bends, seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and the playback is flawless – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
