ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful and amazingly still-sealed LP from Philips (6500 144, Dutch pressing, label iteration unknown, most likely red/silver* label, stereo) features violinist Henryk Szeryng and pianist Ingrid Haebler in 3 works from their near complete cycle of Mozart’s output for violin and piano, made in the warm acoustics of the Mozarteum, Salzburg in May and September* 1972.

 

Although I cannot be certain, based on the thickness of the album, I believe this to be a red/silver pressing, vs. the later, and thinner, red/white issue.

 

Included then are the following works of Mozart:

 

Violin Sonata No. 23 in D Major K. 306*

 

Violin Sonata No. 28 in E-flat Major K. 380

 

Six Variations for Violin and Piano in G minor on the French song “Hélas, j’ai perdu mon amant” K. 360

 

There is a warmness, purity and sparkle to Szeryng's playing that is utterly captivating and Haebler matches the consumate artistry of his partner, bar for bar, each inspiring the other. How refreshing to have a true partnership of equals, the two instruments perfectly balanced, the violin not overspotlit, which so often spoils such recordings.

 

Wrote the critic S.S. in his review for the March 1975 issue of The Gramophone: “K. 306 is a piece of altogether another kind, brilliant and lively, and Ingrid Haebler and Henryk Szeryng do it in spirited fashion yet with delicacy and precision too. They make splendid musical sense of Mozart's unorthodox form in the opening movement, where the first subject is recapitulated only in the closing bars—it has a fine climactic effect; there is much tenderness in the Andante, and in the finale, another two-tempo movement, both warmth and vivacity.”

 

Needless to say, the recording is of Philips’ finest analog quality and these performances have never sounded more beautiful than here, lacking the 'edge' their CD incarnations suffer from. Not only among Szeryng and Haebler's finest recordings, but among the great Mozart recordings ever set down for posterity – a cherishable, wonderful set.

 

Incidentally, the striking cover photo of Szeryng and Haebler was taken by Werner Neumeister, Munich. The fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, in English only, were written by Hans Christoph Worbs.

 

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

 

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. Although this is a truly sealed copy, there is slight bumping at corners and a bit of fraying to the laminate on the rear panel, but that is all. There rae no seamsplits, bends, or owners’ markings, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as an excellent collector’s copy.

 

The condition of the LP itself is MINT. This is a still-sealed, unplayed copy – the ideal collector’s copy.
