redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome LP – a still-sealed copy – from Philips (65 00 531, Spanish pressing, label iteration unknown – presumably red/silver label, stereo) features Henryk Szeryng's landmark account of Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 61, recorded on 24 April 1973 with conductor Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, with the Philips engineers providing warm and opulent sound.
Note: Szeryng plays Joachim's cadenzas in the first and third movements.
Wrote the eminent critic Michael Jameson for BBC Music Magazine:
"Szeryng’s lordly and serene account of the Beethoven Concerto, one of the great musical monuments of the Philips catalogue, will be remembered with reverence and affection as one of a handful of truly great recordings of this work. Digitally revitalised, it emerges with renewed vitality and depth, with the unhurried splendour of Szeryng’s playing the more astonishing for its tonal beauty and ferocity of vision. A hallmark of Szeryng’s Beethoven was his lifelong espousal of the Joachim cadenzas – in themselves a welcome alternative to the more familiar Kreisler offerings...An indispensable recording. There are superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Robin Golding, printed in Spanish only. The striking cover photo of Szeryng was taken by Frits van Swoll, Bussum.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. Although a genuinely still-sealed copy, there are nonetheless some creasing / slight bend to the upper-left corner. However, there are no seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is MINT. This is a still-sealed, unplayed copy – the ideal collector's copy.
PLEASE NOTE:
This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
