French pressing, red/silver label – ED1, mono
Henryk Szeryng's first commercial recording of Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 61, set down in the warm acoustics of the Maison de la Mutualité, Paris in November 1952 with no less than fellow violinist, the legendary Jacques Thibaud, conducting l'Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire. Incidentally, Szeryng plays Joseph Joachim's cadenzas in the First and Third Movements.
This performance more often turns up in the later Odeon re-issue (XOC 804) or on a cheap CBS France release (51004). On offer here is the highly desirable very first LP issue, a fine copy of one of the great Beethoven Violin Concerto recordings to have graced the catalog.

FULL PLAY CHECK (listened to record from beginning to end)
Side 1 plays EX minus some background noise and some toc because a very littkle tiny mark (about 3 millimeter).
Side 2 plays EX minus some background noise and some toc because a very littkle tiny mark (about 0,5 INCHES millimeter).
Record is graded with the combination SME/ORTOFON SPU GOLD cartridge. This combination is very sensitive to marks and backgroundnoise.
Probably with a with a mono cartridge the soft tics and "crackles" are disappeared.
There is surface noise throughout, but it is not overly obtrusive and Szeryng's tone shines through with great clarity and presence. Nonetheless, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a solid collector's copy.
