This very handsome 2-LP box set from Philips (6700 017, French pressing, red/white label, stereo, booklet included) features Henryk Szeryng's sublime traversal of Bach's 6 Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord BWV 1014-1019, recorded with the great Helmut Walcha in the rich acoustics of Eglise Maronite du Liban, Paris, from 5-8 and 12-13 June 1969, beautifully finished and deeply felt performances that can be spoken in of in the same breath as those of Grumiaux.

Szeryng was a remarkable Bach player, as his accounts of the Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin BWV 1001-1006, both studio and 'live' have so consistently demonstrated. He is no less insightful here and the choice of Walcha as accompanist was an inspired one, for the latter's command of this repertoire are beyond praise. Together they make a formidable duo, one recorded in Philips finest analog quality sound – treasurable from first to last.

Included is a lovely full-size, 8-page booklet with extensive notes on the music (uncredited) – provided in French, German, and English. The memorable cover photo of Szeryng and Walcha is similarly uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the box is VERY GOOD. There is a 2” split to the lower box (top edge), as well as shelfwear, but that is all. There are no bends, corner breaks, owners' markings or other defects and remains solid and attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the booklet is near-MINT and there are no flaws to speak of – the binding remains perfect and the pages are bright and crisp.

The condition of the 2 LPs is near-MINT and both play without defect of any kind – superb collector's copies.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
