This lovely 2LP box set from Philips (6768 029, Dutch pressing, blue/white labels, stereo, booklet included) features Henryk Szeryng's sublime traversal of Bach's 6 Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord BWV 1014-1019, recorded with the great Helmut Walcha in the warm acoustics of the Eglise Maronite du Liban, Paris during 5-8 and 12-13 June 1969.
These are beautifully finished and deeply felt performances that can be spoken in of in the same breath as those of Grumiaux, Menuhin, Scheiderhan, et al.
Szeryng was a remarkable Bach player, as his accounts of the Sonatas & Partitas for Solo Violin, both studio and 'live' have so consistently demonstrated. He is no less insightful here and the choice of Walcha as accompanist was an inspired one, for the latter's command of this repertoire are beyond praise. Together they make a formidable duo, one recorded in Philips finest analog quality sound – treasurable from first to last.
Included is a full-size double-gatefold booklet with extensive notes (uncredited) on the music, printed in German, English, and French. The striking cover art reproduces Arjé Plas’s photo entitled “Old Instruments from the collection of the Gemeentemuseum, The Hague”.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is EXCELLENT. There is slight wear at corners and mild shelfwear, but that is all. There are no corner breaks, seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the box remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive– overall, an excellent collector’s copy.
The condition of the booklet is near-MINT – a fine copy.
The condition of the 2 LPs is near-MINT throughout and playback in both is superb – overall, these are truly fine collector's copies.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
