Label/Format: Decca – Blue boxed format – issued in 1970 this rare album would not have have been issued unboxed.

Label Conditions: Both clean and quite attractive and intensely coloured. Spindle marks are moderate and some can be seen. Clearly this rare record has been played a fair number of times but way way short of excessive.

Cat Number: SKL 5050.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 136 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Quite rare, certainly one of the rarer Decca albums and for progressive rock collectors this is a highly sort-after and desirable record – and deservedly so.

The Band: Keith Cross - guitars, keyboards, harmony vocals; Peter Dunton - drums, lead vocals; Bernard Jinks - bass guitar, harmony vocals.

Brief Info: Along with the likes of High Tide – another classic short-lived ‘progressive’ band, this trio are equally elusive and this one-off album is seldom found. Three little known musicians on a major label and just making the one album – almost unbelievable because this is a superb progressive guitar-driven set. There are moments when the aforementioned High Tide are reminded of, with some splendid frenzied guitars. Some quieter moments too, the epic ‘Morning’ occupies all of side two and is a prog-rock fans dream piece. The cover, featuring spectacular front artwork is attractive with few blemishes, the black unprotected back is always difficult of course but shows only modestly light wear. The record itself has several marks, mostly light surface ones that have little effect on sound. One that has been played more than I usually offer, but this is such a classic and elusive album, it has to be offered. Sound for most all is very high and not one for the discerning audiophile collector, but it will be perfect for the more ‘average’ vinyl fan on more of a budget. Cover Grade and Format: EX(-), arguably slightly better. It’s a single format, and although the back states ‘laminated with Clarifoil’, this one isn’t and I feel sure this is the first one I have seen like this. Clearly one that has missed the lamination process, every one of these I have seen or had have laminate on the front. Printed in England by Moore & Mattes Ltd.

Front: Being unlaminated, obviously this is highly wear-prone but this front still looks very nice indeed. The colourful artwork has not faded or rubbed to any degree and the general lack of penetrating ringwear is good news. There is some mild surface rubbing but no inkloss and any creasing minimal and very light. I genuinely consider this a rare variant, this cover should have been laminated as confirmed by the back text but isn’t.

Cover Back: The back was never laminated and being this black means its ultra prone to wear. This has a few traces or rubbing but any present being minimal and light. There is minimal inkloss and the lack of ringwear is a huge bonus, few will ever avoid it. A little edgewear encroaches into view as does the spine text that is centred low which is good news here as the spine has rubbed. A very decent back to complement the unusual matt finished front.

Top Edge: A little mild rubbing.

Bottom Edge: Less than moderate, patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with minimal wear and no feathering. Record entered on this right edge.

Spine and Text: Thin, possibly compressed with rubbing. A high percentage of the text present and low but some rubbing to the top of some letters.

Corners: All have tip rubs but retain fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very respectable cover and the first unlaminated, matt-finished example of this cover I have ever seen. This has to be rare like this. Highly unusual for a cover to state ‘Laminated with Clarifoil’ but not including it. A different variant for the serious collector.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading & Sound Quality: VG with some mainly light surface marks and a couple of small, light more penetrating marks that do have a brief few light clicks. Mostly on the louder passages on the start of the album and over-powered by the awesome loud guitar-driven rock, these can be heard little. Most of this album plays superbly and was a highly enjoyable play-grade – if it wasn’t, believe me I would not offer it. That said it’s not one for the audiophile connoisseur or very discerning sound purist as it does have some light, gentle surface sound on the few quiet passages. This bothered me little as it really is that light and this too on a highly revealing system. I am one of the few sellers that actually explain the equipment I play-grade my records on – I consider this highly important for the serious collector. Budget systems reveal little in the way of blemishes and they are lost in mediocre sound with lesser detail. On the very start of side two, there is a moderate click just before the music starts and then two much lighter clicks and then nothing, I am struggling to find the culprit mark for this brief blemish. The entire album plays with distortion-free sound and the guitar-driven entertainment is all focused and sharp with no clipping. So even though there are some marks, most all are ignored and the music remains enjoyable and tracking effortless on all the music areas. Decca records are tough and resiliant, and this VG graded record plays mostly above its strict definition. VG does not mean worn-out with poor sound, far from it. This record visually grades VG but most plays way above that, even the quiet passages with a little gentle surface sound is better than VG. Excellent and above sound dominates and this exhilarating album was a real pleasure. A copy that many will enjoy, this really is a ‘lost’ rock classic and it’s always a pleasure to hear again from its original source. A very decent overall copy for the right collector and one I can still happily recommend. If you have doubts however, do not bid.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
