Sure, they may LOOK like an O-Ren Ishii board meeting on the cover, but Takeshi Terauchi and his Blue Jeans can lay down a 200mph surf guitar BURNER that scorches the dance floor better than even the 5.6.7.8s in their prime. Supposedly this 1966 album was Takeshi's re-working of traditional Japanese songs in the "surf Eleki beat" style, but since I grew up in New Jersey, I'm not really up on either my traditional Japanese songs or whatever the f*** surf Eleki beat is. But I DO know this one COOKS, and rocks just as hard and just as fast (most of the times FASTER) than your average Standells or Kingsmen or Yardbirds album, and that makes me happy. Just check out the blisteringly-fast flying twang surf guitar and flashy bendy notes all OVER "Soran Bushi." Or the drunk-on-sake wobbly pounding surf rocker "Yosokai Bushi." But it's not all crash and burn here, either. These guys will occasionally get all Takashi Miike on yer a**, and pull out some Ringu-inspired spooky haunted house soundtrack like "Saitaro Bushi," with its Halloween creaks, wind sfx and someone chanting Sadako's death curse over the brooding backdrop. Or "Edo Komorita," where some funereal drums wake up a baby while a stoned surf rock tune plays at half speed before someone in the band falls asleep and literally starts snoring near the end. Look, I don't know what any of LET'S GO ELEKI BEAT actually MEANS, but I can find my way up Route 1 to Jersey City during rush hour. And if I'm playing THIS album during the drive, I get there in HALF the time.
