·      TAL FARLOW – THE SWINGING GUITARS OF TAL FARLOW – ULTRA-RARE ORIGINAL 1957 AMERICAN RECORDING SOCIETY (ARS) MAIL ORDER-ONLY PRIVATE PRESSING MONO LP G-418

·      AMERICAN RECORDING SOCIETY (ARS) WAS A PRECURSOR OF THE MODERN-DAY RECORD CLUBS, BUT WITH ONE IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE: WHILE THE RECORD CLUBS SOLD THEIR ITEMS FOR PROFIT AND BY MAIL ORDER ONLY AFTER A SPECIFIC TITLE STOPPED SELLING AND CEASED BEING INTERESTING TO THE BUYING MARKETS, ARS PRESSINGS WERE STRICTLY NOT-FOR-PROFIT AND WERE MAILED OUT CONCURRENTLY OR EVEN SLIGHTLY EARLIER THAN THE COMMERCIALLY RELEASED (STOCK) COPIES.  THE ARS RELEASES DID NOT HAVE A CUSTOM ARTWORK OR COVER, WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THEY WERE SHIPPED WHILE THE RECORDINGS WERE NOT YET READY FOR THE COMMERCIAL RELEASE; THE ARS PRESSINGS CONSISTED OF THREE ELEMENTS: GENERIC CARDBOARD SLEEVE, EXTERNAL EMBOSSED BAGGY (PRINTED WITH ARS LOGO AND NAME) AND A 2- OR 4-PAGE BOOKLET (WHICH WOULD TYPICALLY BE MORE ELABORATE THAN THE LINER NOTES ON THE COMMERCIAL RELEASE. OUR COPY OF THIS CLASSIC TAL FARLOW TITLE COMES WITH ALL THREE ELEMENTS PRESENT.

·      Another interesting detail: this ARS pressing has a Rudy Van Gelder’s his initials (RVG) clearly hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). It should be noted that the regular, stock copies on  Verve/Clef Series label did NOT have Van Gelder's imprimatur. To the best of our knowledge and recollection, Norman Granz's Verve family of labels did not use Van Gelder's mastering services until 1961 at the earliest.

In the mid-'50s, guitarist Tal Farlow led one of his finest groups, a drumless trio with pianist Eddie Costa and bassist Vinnie Burke. The same band would record the album Tal a week or two later. With Burke contributing a constant walking bass, the interplay between Farlow and Costa is always exciting, whether they are playing unisons or trading off. This 1999 CD reissue not only has the original seven selections but "Gone With the Wind" (which was left off of the original LP due to lack of space) plus three full-length alternate takes that are basically on the same level as the masters. Among the highpoints are "Taking a Chance on Love," "Yardbird Suite," "Like Someone in Love," and Farlow's lone original, "Meteor," which utilizes the chord changes of "Confirmation." Hot bebop that is easily recommended.

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)         The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)          The album comes with the original 4-page insert/brochure

(f)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
