I am a private record collector (not a dealer). A quick look at my feedback will show that, previously, I have bought a lot more than I have sold; however, nearly all purchases are records and I, therefore, have an excellent understanding of the importance of accurate and strict grading. With the proviso that all records (even sealed mint records) will make some sort of surface noise if you listen carefully enough, you will find that my records are as strictly graded as anybody’s and more strictly graded than many. In particular, any of my records graded VG will display ‘no major deterioration in sound quality’; I’ve bought some shockers in this category and think it is the grading that is most misunderstood. My VG records will either play through with noticeable but low level surface noise, usually caused by age / build up of dust in the grooves etc, or they will play better than this mostly, but be affected by ‘clicks’ for very short periods of time, usually caused by light scratches. Unlike some, I do listen to the records before I list them to check the actual sound not just how they look visually. Personally, I’m less bothered about minute details about sleeves, but, since some collectors are, I tend to grade these conservatively. Lastly, since grading is, ultimately, a matter of opinion, I offer a full refund (less return postage) to any buyer dissatisfied for any reason.
I am intending to list many records during 2013. To start with, I am going to list a lot of mainly ‘cheaper’ records. I am aware that, relatively, postage costs are a bit of a problem with these sorts of records. You can reduce this problem by purchasing more than one record; officially, I charge £1.50 for second and subsequent LPs, but it might turn out to be less than this once I have actually packaged and posted them. I will refund the difference and you will only pay what it actually costs me to package and post them (packaging costs me about 50p). Keep watching and improve your collection with me during 2013! I will be listing more ‘collectable’ records during the coming weeks and months.
