TALLIS SCHOLARS Clemens Non Papa Audiophile DMM Sublime sacred music 1500s NM- LP
The Tallis Scholars is a choir dedicated to re-creating the sublime sacred music of the past. Jacob Clemens, who wrote during the Renaissance, in the 1500s, composed over 233 motets, 15 masses and 159 vernacular psalms in a little over 10 years.
Under Director Peter Phillips, Clemens’s compositions here include: an introductory motet, Pastores quidnam vidistis or “Shepherds, Tell Us”; a mass, Missa Pastores quidnam vidistis; and concludes with three motets.
The album includes the actual language, together with the translations, so the listener can follow the meaning with the music along with the seven or eight voices of the singers.
This audiophile recording makes use of Direct Metal Mastering to provide the most faithful reproduction of Clemens’s music. It was issued Gimell Records 1585-13 in 1987.
We play-graded this album as NM-, with excellent stereo sound, although there was a suspicion of surface noise on Side 2, Track 1. The vinyl is also NM-.
The gatefold cover graphics are perfect. The interior of the gatefold, with the words in Latin, English, and three other languages, is excellent. The back cover text is vivid and clean, but there are two unobtrusive tears of less than one inch on the left edge. Aside from this minor defect, the cover would be NM- .
