Label Conditions: Both immaculate: very clean and attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. This orginal German-pressed underground classic looks barely even played.

Cat Number:    OMM 566 004.

Mode / Speed:    Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps:    Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record:  130 grams.  [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy.  Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I  have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity:  Quite rare as a German-pressed original on this groundbreaking label. Not sure if this was even issued in the UK and I regard this as the rarest, and arguably best TD album ever.

So What is Krautrock and its Rarity?:  ‘Krautrock’ was an affectionate term given to a new wave of young German bands in the late 1960s and early 70s. Before the emergence of these pioneering experimental rock and electronic artists, the German music scene was a real mess of sugary pop music. Out of this fog of a musical mire, a very new sound emerged as radical and as daring as anything ever heard. Whereas in the UK, rock music was very much blues or psych-based, but these young long-haired, pioneering German musicians played music that was very different. They opened new musical horizons and boundaries into the use of sound as entertainment. Several were classically trained musicians (Can) – some could barely play an instrument at all (Kluster). Far too weird and experimental for most, many were into avant garde territory, but this German underground scene was admired by many and loved by a small number of record buyers of the time. The sounds they created were often challenging and difficult, but unique and were highly influential for the development of music. Some used conventional instruments, some delved into electronics and some used unconventional devices to form sound (Faust). A few became successful even outside Germany with the odd hit single or two (Kraftwerk and Can), but some did not compromise and never sort commercial success (Faust, Neu). Although there were others, the best-known of the early experimental Krautrock bands were: Kraftwerk, Can, Faust, Amon Duul I and II, Neu, Popul Vuh, Guru Guru, Kluster and Tangerine Dream. All are worth checking out – they made some of the most groundbreaking music in rock and their importance is beyond any dispute. In terms of rarity, these early albums are never easy to find especially in top conditions, they sold in relatively small numbers and are seldom seen or offered, especially in high grading conditions.

Musicians:    Edgar Froese – six- and twelve-string guitar, organ, piano, sound effects, tapes; Conrad Schnitzler – cello, violin, typewriter; Klaus Schulze – drums, percussion, metal sticks. Uncredited Guests: Jimmy Jackson – organ; Thomas Keyserling – flute.

Brief Info:   A band that have issued a multitude albums since this 1970 debut from Germany. It was the only album to include this original line-up, Schulze leaving soon after to form Ash Ra Tempel, leaving again after just one album to seek a solo career which again proved prolific. ‘Electronic Meditation’ is a massively groundbreaking album within the Krautrock genre and not sounding like any other TD album. This has it roots more in underground rock than purely electronic music and includes some superb guitar work by Froese before he turned more to synths thereafter. Louder and more manic than the other Ohr albums that followed, these were more subdued and spacey with atmospheric soundscape music - few clues to this new direction were heard on this remarkable debut. These vintage landmark Ohr recordings were not initially issued in the UK, but some followed later pressed by Virgin. These German originals are highly sort-after by connoisseurs of the new underground Krautrock scene that emerged in the late 60s, and this one is up there with the likes of the legendary classics like Can’s ‘Monster Movie’, Amon Duul’s ‘Phallus Dei’, Faust and early Kraftwerk. Ohr one of the greatest of the German labels but not always the best of pressings, this one is superb and plays beautifully. The original cover, with text in German and English has survived the years well and has aged little. For those seeking the earliest and best from this mind-bending era and genre, look no further.

Cover Grade and Format:  EX+ at the very least. A gatefold format with laminate on front and back, the ends inside the gatefold on the top edges. All closed edges are laminated. Printed and made in Germany.

Lamination – Front & Back:    The laminate is very clear and shiny and has few marks or creases. All is solid with no lifting or blisters, any ‘flaking’ is confined to the spine and even this is tiny and mild. German covers often do shed their laminate and often these early covers are seen with fair degrees of peeling – not this one. There were some mild tone spots on this one but they  have successfully cleaned off leaving minimal and faint traces only when seen right up close – few will better these attractive surfaces these days I feel sure. Made with soft and somewhat flimsy card, this has all the recipes for creasing and laminate issues, but this has avoided it well. Even  under light, there is barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling and overall, retains a high degree of freshness. A real gem from the Krautrock vaults that I am delighted to offer.

Cover Inner Gatefold:    The inside is in great condition also. There is some set-off on the left side where deep intense red rests upon white, this is almost unavoidable of course and few, it any will be seen without it. This apart, it has little else to fault.

Top Edges: Little wear, odd small crease and compression. These are soft and delicate.

Bottom Edges:    As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type:   Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering, both untrimmed. Record enters on this back edge, the front being closed.

Spine and Text:  A natural central fold-crease has occured that will be on all examples that have been opened even only a few times. There are two small peeled spots, that apart, all laminate is present and mostly very secure. Solid, straight and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is present and unworn but a little natural sinkage into the spine ridge from opening.

Corners:    Small tip creases and odd minor rub, all pretty exceptional for such a soft and fragile cover. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary:  A very strong all round example of this very fragile original early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner:    Plain white and unlined and orignal, this has some mildish toning in places but hardly any creasing and no edge splits.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading:  EX++,  A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and with barely a noteworthy mark on view. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading:    Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading:  This superb Ohr record plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. I am always nervous of this label, I have heard a number of very disappointing pressings on it and although this labels offered some of the most exciting German progressive music ever issued, the pressing standards often let it down. Certainly a factor the very ambient and quiet TD albums that followed this one, but this is much louder and not as typical as the rest on Ohr. I am delighted to state, this is a super pressing and it exceeded my cautious expectations. This has minimal traces of surface noise and was a delight to listen too. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing on this highly variable, inconsistent label. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly been carefully handled. Being honest, a copy that has at sometime been stored in cold conditions, but this has not affected the record’s super sound or visuals at all. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, it’s been far too long since I enjoyed this album so clean and fresh, normally having to rely on my imported CD version which really is second-best to this analogue original. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – groundbreaking is far too small a word for this landmark German classic.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
