“Bernard Herrmann’s score in the fanciful Ghost And Mrs. Muir (2oth Century-Fax), had many passages of quiet loveliness, some of which might be of interest out of their screen setting. “ At the time these words of an anonymous reviewer appeared in the September 1947 Issue of Film Music Notes, the name of Bernard Herrmann was still a relatively unfamiliar one on the credit sheet of motion pictures. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947) was is seventh film score, and the fourth of what was to be a long series of assignments from Twentieth Century-Fox. Previously he had created these notable scores for that company: Jane Eyre (1943), Hangover Square (1944), and Anna And The King of Siam (1946).

The Ghost And Mrs. Muir was directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz froma script by Philip Dunne, based on a popular novel by R.A. Dick; the producer was Fred Kohlmar. Critical reception was qute favorable - reviewers of the day found this offbeat little tale of the supernatural to be delightful, tender, and even strangely compelling. Both Hollywood Reporter and Variety made special mention of the music, the latter terming it “a telling factor in building up and sustaining the spirit of the story.”

The Events take place in turn-of-the-century England; Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) is a beautiful young widow who, in order to escape her domineering in-laws, moves to a seaside house with her young daughter and their housekeeper. The place is haunted by the spirit of its former owner, Captain Gregg (Rex Harrison), who, finding that he cannot frighten the dauntless Mrs. Muir away, becomes her ally and, eventually, her spectral lover. Much of Herrmann’s score is frankly romantic in style; many of its pages have a dreamlike quality which alternately evoke images of the sea and the mystery inside the haunted house. Among many striking features of this film score, perhaps the most noticeable is the composer’s avoidance of the typical conventions of Hollywood-type “ghost music.”

The prevailing texture of the music is symphonic, but with sparing use of brass and percussion. In many sequences the size of the orchestra is markedly reduced, and certain pieces use special orchestral colors of a limited palette, generally featuring woodwinds. Herrmann used an orchestra of 67 players, consisting of 3 flutes (doubling piccolos and alto flutes), 2 oboes (including English horn), 2 clarinets, 2 bass clarinets (including contrabass clarinet), 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, battery, 2 harps, celesta, and strings. Following his usual custom, Herrmann orchestrated the entire score himself.

There are about fifty-two minutes of music in The Ghost And Mrs. Muir, of which this recording offers thirty-eight, or almost three-fourths. The score is divided into forty-two separate pieces, or cues, each of which was given a title by Herrmann himself. As in most motion picture music, these cues run in length anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes; here most of them are presented in groups of two or more, heard without pause. This has been done solely as a matter of convenience, to avoid too many small cuts on the disc, and should not be construed as an attempt to create the illusion of related pieces of “concert” music.
