The performances:
New York, Jan 6 1938. Both sides are so engaging they seem to be over in flash. When You’re Smiling is brisk and sprightly, opening on a Morton solo, then Billie’s vocal followed by Teddy for a chorus. The joy of the side is the closing 24 bars of utter magic by Prez. Just lovely. On I Can’t Believe Buck and Bennie solo nicely enough, and there is a snatch of Lester, but the star is Billie, who provides a poignant heart-touching vocal in her ‘soft’ voice, and this really stays with you.
Rarity:
A seasoned collector once advised me that “the Teddy Wilsons are much harder to get than you think†and experience rather bears this out. You can wait a very long time for the ones you want.
Condition:
E+. It’s shop stock, no sign of plays, two tiny handling blemishes.
