TELEMUSIC LIBRARY 3017: 'MUSIQUE EN VRAC' (1971) French Library LP (Telemusic TM3017). Issued 1971 by Editions Musicales Sforzando, Paris. Record in VG to VG+ condition (gaps between tracks and some quiet sections within tracks have noticeable crackles and 'pops' but general playback quality once the tracks 'get going', as it were, is pretty good). Sleeve is also in VG to VG+ condition (back has a strip of brown discoloration where a length of sticky tape was once affixed but condition other than that is pretty nice).

1971 LP from the sought-after Telemusic Music Library. This fascinating psych/rock/funk set has compositions by some of the legends of French Library Music: Raymond Guiot, Guy Pedersen, Bernard Estardy and Janko Nilovic (also H. Roy and G. Peram who I am not so familiar with).

Premium quality right across the board here:

Primitive Spirit features an insistent, dramatic riff over finger popping fast rhythm, breaking out into half speed funky bridges with great flute and violin solos.

Musique Bacchanale - excellent flute/violin-led drama funk.

Plenty of Flutes - nicely jazzy, in 6/8 time.

Flutes Ad Libitum has previously appeared on a Blow Up compilation and is top-notch flutey funk.

Route de Jour continues in a funky vein with catchy mellow horns.

Pipo Piccolo is the nearest to cheese that this superb LP serves up but it's still great - jolly (almost Medieval) recorders, harpsichord and flutes/piccolos over a driving rhythm.

Locomotion Blues opens with some drum soloing leading into a brassy, jazzy '60s r&b section, cutting several times into an exilharating, ultra tough funk jazz groove.

Rock Session has, as its title suggests, the flavour of a 1960s Mod/r&b workout - plenty of Hammond and wah wah bass vamping over a rampaging, swingy blues rhythm.

Globe Trotting is a superb mellow psych 'freak out session' - opens with insistent flowery guitar pattern and hippy bongos, then majestic Hammond chords; builds incredibly with the bass player going completely crazy and the drums keeping things tightly funky; all perhaps a little in the vein of bands like Traffic. I would love to have been in the studio when these musicians laid this one down!

Optimise Bizarre is rocky/poppy - pleasant but a little twee, although the flute sections add a little mystery.

Final track Visions Fantastique is pure moody psych drama - doodling flute and Hammond organ, intermittent fuzz guitar, bass, drums etc. Superbly menacing stuff - let Lucifer show himself! Then, after the devilish intro, the track cuts into a mellower, although still wild, funky Traffic-style groove to fade. Brilliant stuff.
