Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light to light+, fine and faint spindle marks. A top quality, lightly played copy that offers wonderful clean sound.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. A benchmark weight that for me denotes a heavy pressing.

Rarity: Moderately scarce and lightly played early pressings are much harder to find.

Brief Info: This was the band’s fourth album and for me, one of their best. Their second release of 1969 and it includes a version of the famous song ‘Good Morning Little Schoolgirl’ with some very ‘alternative’ lyrics that would raise many an eyebrow if issued today – and being honest I feel would be banned. I am no prude (to say the least), but these lyrics are bordering on offensive and unnecessary, it can be argued it degrades what is otherwise a superb album. It includes their strongest band line-up and features the brilliant guitar of Alvin Lee, still one of the fastest players ever. This is a very fine copy too with superb sound from start to finish, a typical high quality Deram pressing which for this one is heavily pressed and very modestly played (and with utmost care).

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: this being ultra critical, this is a real looker. A gatefold format with Clarifoil laminate on the front and back. It has the mono/stereo peep-hole on the back and includes the blue inner sleeve to denote this is a stereo copy. Printed and made in England by Moore & Matthes Ltd. This one has no poster, and only a small number ever did.

Lamination: Front & Back: Both sides have superbly fresh laminate that is very shiny and clear with no lifting or blisters worthy of special mention. Any creasing is small and light and most of any are edge hairlines. Even under light, barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling. The peep-hole is undamaged but out of register in manufacture. This has somewhat large end--of-laminate edges where the Clarifoil has contracted (or shrunk). For those doubters who think this actually happens, look as my close-up of the peep-hole on the back. The original position of the laminate has shifted at last 5 mm. This contraction often means this type of laminate pulls away from the cover, hence many of these and other Clarifoils are seen with huge blisters, usually near the spine edge. This one has avoided such issues. A couple of surface marks are seen on the back more under light, but little detracts from what is a splend example of this very colourful cover.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A little minor surface pulling near the top edges where the laminate ends rest together when closed. Sometimes this can pull off large surface areas, again, this has not happened on this one. There is little else really to fault on what are two very clean surfaces.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both pairs show little wear at all and still fairly straight with full laminate coverage that reamins smooth to the fingertip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and both guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge, the front being sealed.

Spine and Text: A very nice spine that that has barely any wear and retains full laminate coverage that is very smooth and unscuffed. Solid and robust, mostly straight with any compression quite modest. Folded quite square so the edges are quite well aligned is not dead parallel. All text is perfect and unworn under solid, clear and still shiny laminate.

Corners: All corners in very fine and neat condition with hardly any wear at all. Any tip rubs or chips are tiny and all retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very colourful late 60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors and my grading I feel is overly harsh.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the blue ‘stereo’ polylined Decca style inner is in fine condition too with little wear, but mildly aged with some fairly light discolouration to the edges. The adhesive for the seams rarely escapes browning and here is all very typical. All edges unsplit and with minimal creasing. Both window circles are immaculate and the lining ultra clear with only very faint ruffle. This one is date-coded 4-71 (April 1971) and it British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: again being very critical. Any surface marks are few, fine and light as seen under angled light. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed on quality Decca-Deram vinyl. A copy very modestly played on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, but as you would expect from the finest of record manufacturers. Few examples will outperform this heavy, quality pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
