Weight of this Record: 150 grams. This 10 grams heavier than the last first press I sold last year.

Rarity: Scarce as an early stereo, most I have seen have been mono.

Original Year of Release: 1968. This one from 1969-70, clearly, the mono mode option still available as the cover still offers the choice.

Musicians: Alvin Lee - vocals, guitar, piano; Chick Churchill - organ, piano; Ric Lee - drums, tympani; Leo Lyons - bass, bow-bass, string bass, percussion.

Brief Info: Third album from this British blue-based rock band. Featuring the guitar talents of Alvin Lee, this was one of the band’s most famed albums. This is not a very first issue, that came on the large Deram logo and full-size label, but this is still very early and never easy to find, especially ones that offers superb, clean sound. This has some very quiet passages and this copy, now way into it’s forties, plays with hardly anything unwanted. A very impressive cover as well, a difficult and quite elusive album in lovely all-round condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a gatefold format with front and back Clarifoil laminate. The inside is matt and smooth, the laminate ends inside on the bottom edges and is just the same as the 1968 issue. Printed and made in England by Garrod and Lofthouse International Ltd and still includes the ‘Patents Pending’ text. The rear has the mono/stereo peephole, the blue inner denotes this being a stereo example. The blue Decca-style lined inner is also included to fill the hole.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides look impressive with shiny, clear and fresh laminate that has avoided has only two very small lifts. One on the left hand edge of the front, the other on the back top right corner. Clarifoil laminate has a strong tendency to shrink over time, often this, and many other covers that have it, are seen with vast blisters lifts, or the covers can even bow. This has little more than a hint of a wave on the front. A slight rim dull is seen on the back more under light, and almost as light as it gets, the front has little. Barely any creasing at all and the dark graphic looks magnificent with deep colour. The rear peep-hole is immaculate, large and crisp and this has no laminate shift and barely and no bowing. All traits difficult to avoid with Clarifoil laminate that will shrink in most cases.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superbly clean and impressive with barely anything to fault at all. Even the laminate ends on the bottom edges has not stuck or pulled, remains clean, crisp and sharp.

Top Edges: One microscopic surface chip and a tiny chip on the back right corner tip. That apart, superbly smooth and even retaining rich shine.

Bottom Edges: Both practically as made and ultra smooth. The avoidance of scuffs or peeling on these storage edges always good news.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with very little hint of wear, with any thickening or burring tiny and few as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this back edge, the front being sealed, both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A superb and very thick spine which is almost a work-of-art in-itself. Solid, quite straight with no compression and uncrushed. This remains near fully erect with only a very slight tilt to the left, which is almost the very least anyone could ever expect. Some of these had a more rounded constructed spine, this is the much wider and spectacular version (when seen in such condition). The entire surface is ultra smooth as new with no cracking, peeling or scuffs. All text is prisine and even the folds are in supreme condition, they hardly get much better.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and light with just a tiny chip to the top right back, as mentioned already. Excellent to near mint shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A truly wonderful all-round example of this lovely late 60’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This highly attractive item should please most collectors and could prove a significant upgrade for many.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): and a full Mint grading is arguably appropriate. The blue stereo polylined inner in the Decca style of course, is in very immaculate condition and little short of as-made. It is the solid, no window type and I can find nothing of any note to really fault. Being blue, this fills the rear cover peep-hole to indicate the record is stereo. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): with any surface marks very fine and faint as seen under bright angled light. A very fine hairline each side, anything else even finer still with scrutiny. There are no penetrating scratches on this record, which is even more essential on a record that does have some very quiet passages that all play superbly. An impressive visual vintage record that is very clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed by Decca. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This excellent record plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything of note to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly registered on a very challenging album. Both channels are clean and sharp and give few clues to this record’s age. A lovely early-pressed copy that I enjoyed immensely, this copy will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. Quite possibly the cleanest and best-pressed example I have heard, and one not ruined basic equipment of the time.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
