The late Miss Teri Thornton should have been one of the world's class divas, but somehow never got off the ground in time. And this particular album, her first and only outing with Columbia Records in 1963, didn't sell well...what were they listening to? I find this album fantastic. A very eclectic collection of tunes (seven bonus tracks added to the original LP's twelve). Thornton's voice is husky and warm, picture a cross between Sarah Vaughn and Della Reese. She's sweeter and more melodious than Reese, but not quite as falsetto-based as Vaughn. My favorite track here is the closer, THE SECRET LIFE. Could Teri have been singing so sweetly about a life she never seemed to know? (between abusive husbands, drug and alcohol problems and even cancer which eventually claimed her life too soon at age 64) An absolute gem that will make you misty, but give you hope. As for the album's opener, OPEN HIGHWAY, the great "Route 66" theme written by the immortal Nelson Riddle (who's own recording of it as an instrumental was a huge success) I applaud Teri for taking on such an inspired project,even if some of the words seem forced into the "tight curves" of Riddle's original notes. It helped matters that Jules Styne's son Stanley wrote the clever lyrics. (instrumentals are sometimes better left alone; lyrics are sometimes hard to do justice by them, but this is an exception) A first rate torch singer, Teri sinks her teeth into such gems as MUSIC, MAESTRO, PLEASE and BABY WON'T YOU PLEASE COME HOME. Lesser known great ones can be found here as well. Listen to the heartache she pours into the Alan & Marylin Bergman and Paul Weston penned GOODBYE IS A LONESOME SOUND. Another track I enjoyed was the jaunty, bluesy-rock like TO REMEMBER YOU BY, a real sentimental type of song. Teri's reading of the Gordon Jenkins classic THIS IS ALL I ASK is a beautiful testimony and rarely does a woman ever dare sing this one. Happily for us, Teri did and did it well.

(b)          The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS STILL SEALED;  HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS EXCELLENT OR VG++

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Back cover has visible dust sediments under the shrink wrap (some of which might be possible to clean up after the shrink wrap has been removed)

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Back cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity. (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a slight warp along the bottom seam; we absolutely GUARANTEE that this will have NO effect on the record.

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams
