Description
Terry Allen Juarez Terry Allen is, first and foremost, a visual artist. He just happens to make brilliant, idiosyncratic albums on the side. In fact, his first album, 1975's Juarez, wasn't even initially conceived as an album, but as a set of songs recorded to accompany an artwork installation. Original copies of the album were released with a set of lithographs illustrating the characters who populate the album's world, an elliptical place where motivations and desires are often shadowy to the point of inscrutability, but the characterizations are almost three-dimensional. The story of two couples on a drinking spree that turns into a murderous chase through the southern California desert, Juarez is a tough-as-nails narrative with the deadpan, biting humor of crime fiction writers like Jim Thompson or Chester Himes. The album was recorded quickly and on a low budget, so the musical settings are ultra-spare, with Allen's whiskey-cured vocals and thumping piano often the only musical elements. As a concept album, the individual songs don't work as well out of context, but listened to as a whole, Juarez is one of the more fascinating country albums of its time, like Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger as reimagined by Quentin Tarantino. Review by Stewart Mason, allmusic.com This is the original first pressing of 1,000 issued on the Landfall lable. The record lables have the same picture of Terry as the front sleeve. This edition was originally a companion piece to a set of lithographs from artwork displayed at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston Texas November 7th - December 8th, 1975. I'm afraid I don't have a set of these lithographs for sale but if you care to look at my other auctions, there is a 52 page colour & B/W glossy catalogue from the exhibition with all the lyrics alongside their respective art pieces. This album also has a cryptic message to 'Mary' along with a signature from Terry on the back sleeve. LP - VG+ (has obviously been played a few times and crackles occasionally). Sleeve - EX+ (two dings on top left corner & bottom right - no seam splits anywhere) Side One Side Two ======== ========= 1. Juarez Device 8. I have been buying on eBay now for many years and have over a thousand positive feedbacks. There is a reason why i have opened a new account with eBay to sell rather than use my existing account. I have in the last year or so returned to my Christian belief. I want to follow what is scriptual in disposing of what, quite honestly, has been a bit of a millstone around my neck. One day i looked around at all the many thousand items that filled two rooms and came to a dawning realisation that i had no idea what 90% of all this stuff was. I mean, i could go and buy something, play it once, log it, and that was the last i ever saw of it. So, this has handed me a golden opportunity to turn around this situation into something positive. I usually find something to say about what i am selling along with a track listing for albums. I hope that my passion and love for these items shines through occasionally amongst my rambling. So why would i want to just give them away. Simple, my love for Jesus as my redeemer is even greater. Matthew chapter 6 verses 1-4 explains the reason for a new eBay account whilst Matthew chapter 19 verses 16-21 gives my explanation for giving the lot to the Haiti Hospital Appeal.
