Terry Fox describes himself as a "sculptor", and all sounds here are generated acoustically from real objects (long piano wires, a sardine can, wooden chopsticks, metal bowls, a metal rowboat). The fact that no electronics were used, even for amplification, is highly impressing, as these "field recordings" take full advantage of the acoustic properties of the objects themselves as well as the natural echoes and reverbs of empty churches, attics, theater stages, and even a metal tunnel. "Lunar Rambles" begins as metal bowls (iron and aluminum, bowed by the artist out on the streets of New York). Had Moondog happened to pass by, an unforgettable duet may well have resulted. It's a great track in a dark ambient way. "Culvert" (an extract from a day-long sound experiment) is one of the most alien sounding recordings here, its high pitched warbling coming on like an extra-terrestrial choir. As with many similar acoustic explorations, the sheer strangeness of Fox's sounds transfigures their source environment completely, and the recordings make clear the rich, beautiful texture of his work. "Culvert" comes from another metal talisman, this one a rowboat model planted in the middle of a 100-foot long tunnel in the middle of a river in the USA. Fox gets his sounds by bashing the darn thing with a panoply of grotesque utensils, joined in that absurd pass-time by two other ninnyhammers he managed to persuade to join him one sunny afternoon for a live improvised session. What a striking image that rowboat presents; if there's a more apposite metaphor for the futility and loneliness of existence, I've yet to find one. "Culvert" was recorded at the Clark Fork river in Missoula, Montana; just about the most mysterious and intriguing piece i’ve heard from Terry, involving some wobbly tape-recorder action (listen to the sound-sample) and what sounds like a glass harmonica being dipped in water. "Timbre" (a performance for two instruments: a homemade instrument strung with piano wire, and a Cessna 172 single engine airplane). During a period of two hours the airplane made six passes over the performance area out of sight of the spectators. The instrument emitted a continuous drone for four and one half hours and was tuned to the propeller pitch of the airplane. Sponsored by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in March 1976. The legendary American artist Terry Fox is known for his pioneering work in performance, sculpture, drawing and installation. Throughout his career, Fox (who died in Cologne in 2008), focused on sound as a fundamental artistic material. Many of his most important sound works were realized long before terms such as "sound art" or "audio art" became widely known. In the works of Terry Fox, text, time, sound, objects, symbol and space are interwoven to such an extent that real space and mental space combine to create a new space. In the interaction of cognitive and sensual experience, forces are set into motion which render perceptible what is beyond comprehension. By virtue of his psychic-physical constitution, the viewer becomes the code-breaker of the world. A central participant in the West Coast performance, video, and conceptual art movements emerging in the late 1960’s, Terry Fox developed a new aesthetic that combined the visual arts with text and also explored the properties of sound and its relationship to space.
