It may be illuminating at this point to paraphrase David Toop from his excellent book "Ocean of Sound":
In their search for absolutes, a number of music critics have looked to Riley as the definitive starting point for various trends: minimalism, extreme repetition, all-night trance improvisations and tape-delay systems. Pieces such as In C, A Rainbow In Curved Air, and Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band were important in their time because they signalled two important changes in the way the worlds of music and commerce worked.
One: a composer was writing pieces which had grooves and improvised around modes (just like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa and half the rock bands in Psychedelia), which sounded as if psychotropics had been involved at some stage of the compositional process, which explored new technology and studio processing.
Two: the albums were packaged by Columbia as rock albums, so implying that the razor wire dividing so-called classical, rock, jazz, art and commerce had been cut in a few places.
Never mind the embarrassing occurrence of hippie-speak on the In C sleeve-notes - 'No preconceptions, you just dig it' - the music, as they say, spoke for itself.
Essentially modest, Riley downplays all of this. After all, his contribution to the late 20th Century mix emerged out of collaborative work and improvisations with La Monte Young, Pauline Oliveros and Chet Baker.
After the first flush of enthusiasm for minimalism and systems music, Riley tended to be dismissed as an old hippy, past this peak, while Philip Glass, Steve Reich, John Adams and Michael Nyman slid with varying degrees of compositional credibility into a new orthodoxy of avant-garde populism. But as Riley says, life goes in cycles and suddenly, the open works of Riley seem more expansive, more useful to the fractured nature of music in the present day than ever before.
Track Listing:
Side 1: In C (part I)
Side 2: In C (part II)
LABELS: The labels are clean and bright with no unwanted marks/writing and just a few light spindle traces - this copy has seen little play
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its original deep, like new, glossy sheen with just a couple of superficial, very light marks on the surfaces - these have no audio consequence - the playback is practically flawless throughout
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio quality - clean, sharp, warm and vibrant and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no clicks/pops and no surface noise. The LP is beautifully recorded and plays to an extremely high standard with all frequencies bright and clear, no groove-wear and no distortion (it has seen very little play) and is critically graded NEAR MINT for audio (it's practically flawless) - this is a really fantastic copy
SLEEVE: The cover is clean, sharp and fresh with no real wear to speak of, just a touch of rubbing on the spine (but little elsewhere) - all spine text is still clear and bold - EXCELLENT
