Description
Here is a true absolute first mono pressing of Prestige 7118 "After Hours" with Thad Jones, Kenny Burrell, Frank Wess, Mal Waldron, Paul Chambers and Arthur Taylor. This first pressing was issued in 1957 on the yellow Prestige label with "HI FI" on the label which is indicative of a first pressing and RVG in the deadwax.
This record didn't sell the first time I put it up for auction, so I'm starting it at an insanely low opening bid giving you the opportunity to grab this piece of jazz history for only a fraction of what it has sold for in the past!!
Record: Looks and plays VG to VG+. In typical lighting, this record appears excellent. Upon close inspection under direct very strong light, one can find many hairlines (while many are probably a result of insertion and removal from the sleeve, there are a few that are longer and thicker.) However, there are no deep scratches. This is still a very nice example of this record.
The LP has been cleaned on a Nitty Gritty record cleaning machine and play graded on a VPI Scout turntable with a calibrated AT150MLX cartridge and a stylus with less than 100 hours on it. There is some light background crackle which is more noticeable during the quiet parts, but it is never distracting. There is not a single skip or stick, but there are intermittent loud pops (lasting no more than 30 seconds) on Side B, Track 2 ("Empty Street") where there is a small pit which is almost certainly a flaw in the original pressing.
Label: Both labels are still in excellent condition with no writing, sticker residue or any other significant damage.
Deadwax: Side A and Side B both have RVG machine stamps, and a handwritten PRLP-7118-A on Side A and PRLLP-7118-B on Side B.
Cover: VG+. The front cover looks great though there is a bend in the right-hand upper corner. The spine is nearly completely intact with all writing perfectly visible. There is some slight damage to the spine, no more than a quarter inch at the top. The top of the jacket itself has about a 4-inch split in the middle and some splitting at the corner where the aforementioned bend exists. There is about a 2-inch split on the bottom in the middle and small damage on the bottom right hand corner. The back cover has noticeable staining and discoloration presumably from being in a former owner's smoking home. Please see the pictures and ask questions if you require clarification.
About me: I am a longtime rock and soundtrack record collector who buys often but very rarely sells his records. However, I recently purchased this item and a true first mono pressing of Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin' (Blue Note 1588, check my other listings) and felt that these should really be passed on to someone who will appreciate them best.
