One might not think off the top, but 2 Live Crew’s second album went on to be one of the most significant projects in the history of both rap music and free speech. In 1990, the album became both the first Southern rap project to go platinum and the first (and only) album to be deemed legally obscene in the United States. The decision was later overturned by the Eleventh Circuit.
