Label Conditions: Both clean and attractive with deep rich colour. Spindle marks on the lighter side of moderate and show more under light, the record plays superbly.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Brilliant debut from this most famous American band, although less appreciated outside the United States initially with only minimal sales. This was issued briefly on ATCO in the UK and is seldom seen. A brilliant southern-rock guitar band and a classic first album that includes the sublime ‘Whipping Post’ – here misspelled on the label as ‘Whipping Rose’ – and this is a very fine copy, the record plays superbly and loudly recorded with full-on sound. This one has the UK-made cover as well, this more often using the imported version. If guitar-driven blues-rock is for you, a bit like Derek and Dominoes, this album is unmissable.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press, includes the date-coded Polydor-style inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Not even easy to find a UK-made version of this cover, some copies were sold in imported American sleeves. This is very prone to wear, and even one with some – mainly to the edges – it will never prove easy to find a great deal better these days. The front has a few light and fine creases, any surface marks also fine and light seen under light. A light fade on the top edge, but the lack of rubbing and sticker issues are a plus on such an unforgiving surface, and overall, this front remains attractive.

Cover Back: Similar again, better if anything. The lack of ring wear always a massive plus on this side.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A small tone spot, not a great deal else to fault.

Top Edges: Both straight and flat with only light to moderate patchy rubbing, not really much at all.

Bottom Edges: Moderate patchy rubbing on the back towards the right, very little at all on the front.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Patchy moderate thickening mostly on the back outer entrance edge. These are totally natural with no trimming or enhancements.

Spine and Text: An impressive spine. Solid, straight, with hardly any compression or tilt. The white surface still clean and all text fully present and unworn, this also nicely centred as-seen. I have seen very few of these will full text intact.

Corners: Light tip rubbing on the spine, moderate on the right corner tips. Fine to very fine shape retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: A scarce UK-made cover for this debut classic, it has a little wear, but in context, it is modest for a cover known not to wear well. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the original Polydor-style polylined inner sleeve has lightly aged with the usual darkening of the paper. Any creasing little and light, both window circles neat and the lining still quite clear. The edges fully intact with no repairs. This one date-coded 1/0370 (March 1970), so now into it’s fiftieth year.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: or thereabouts. A lovely vintage record that is very clean, with impressive shine and very solidly pressed. Under my very bright grading lamp, fine and some wispy surface marks are seen, but no penetrating stylus scratches. Viewed in average room light, little even registers and this remains an attractive record. It plays superbly throughout and it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive UK first issue plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This is superbly produced with loud full-on sound, it proved a fantastic listen, and what a band the Allmans were. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. The cover may have quite modest shelf wear, but few available copies will outperform this record for sound I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and generally carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading and it should please many fans and collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
