‘THE AMAZING BLONDEL and A FEW FACES’ MEGA-RARE 1970, BELL LP NEAR MINT!
The group's first album, recorded as a duo backed by top British session men Big Jim Sullivan and Clem Cattini. The sound here is generally more mainstream rock (there's even a sitar and tabla noodling around on one track), a lot less elegant and a lot bluesier (especially "You Don't Want My Love") than anything they were later known for, and with horns (of the local marching band variety) around as well.
The antique-style tracks ("Saxon Lady," "Season of the Year," "Shepherd's Song") worked best, and became the basis for what followed.
‘The Amazing Blondel’ is one of the Holy Grails of the prog/folk/rock collecting world. Rare as hen’s teeth, it had almost no distribution at its issue and disappeared almost instantly via the remainder bins in 1970. It is made all the more sought after by the fact that the original master tapes were lost and the Edsel reissue on CD is sonically poor and comes with quite a bit of background noise.
It is then, all the more satisfying to be able to grade this copy as almost Mint. I never grade anything as Mint as I believe that means a record has never been played. However, I suspect that most would list this as just that. The sound quality is stunningly good as one would expect from the days before recycled vinyl.
Sleeve Condition: The sleeve is between Ex+ and Near Mint with a hint of ringwear and two, light creases. Otherwise, lovely, glossy, laminated and flat with very little evidence of wear.
Record Condition: As near to Near Mint as one can find without unearthing an unplayed copy. No centring marks on the label. A vague trace of vinyl discolouration on track 2, side 2, a manufacturing flaw, which in no way affects play. I’m being really picky mentioning this, in fact, one really has to look hard for it.
Overall, as good a copy as anyone is going to find of the incredibly rare LP.
